How Can We Plan and Write a Nonfiction Piece?

Overview

In this unit, kindergartners use a combination of drawing, dictating and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts where they name what they are writing about and provide some information about the topic. During the unit, students use technology to research a topic related to the science standards. Students then participate in student-led writing conferences and teacher-monitored peer review– enabling them to take ownership of their writing. At the end of the unit, students present what they have learned to their classmates through PowerPoint, iPad video, an oral presentation, or play.

About the Teacher

Lindsey Rhodes is currently a Kindergarten teacher at Sugar Hill Elementary in Gainesville, GA, where she serves as her grade level chair. She received her B.A. and M.A. in Early Childhood Education, as well as her Ed.S in Curriculum and Instruction from Piedmont College. Her best piece of teaching advice is to emphasize respect in the classroom. Respect is vital and should be reciprocal. Students who respect their teacher strive to meet goals. Teachers who respect their students are effective in helping ALL learners be successful.
